i saw this in the paper at office depot on a sunday for a clearance price that i could actually afford. always wanted a lenovo but generally gravitated toward the hp or dell/emachines family for price safety. there's nothing more horrible than buying something you really cant afford, so when this went on clearance for that week, i bought the only one they had left in that store within hours of opening the add.
six months or so, we got extremely lucky and found an affordable emachines deasktop with impressive specs: intel pentium processor, 4gb ram, 833fsb, and a full terabyte hard drive with backup drive. the desktop is fast and has been the best computer ive ever used, save for a buddy's imac. anyrate, very impressive. and this notebook/laptop out performs it.
it's fast, the battery life exceeds four hours even watching a movie, the weight is balanced, the keyboard is easy to adjust to being that the keyboard itself measures 14" vertically. the only thing i tend to do to improve this notebook is perhaps trade the 250gb hard drive for a full terabyte in the next year or so because i intend on owning this for half a decade or more if at all possible. for the price, this device is way ahead of its time.
i did order a wireless mouse (amazon has one on sale for %55 off right now, so right at $12 with free shipping) and an external usb speaker that clamps onto the top of the screen. when those come in, this machine will be absolutely perfect.
we have decided to keep the desktop for now, because i would prefer to keep that much hard drive space at our disposal--being as cameras keep rising in pixel rate and we intend to get an hd camcorder in the next year or so, and it IS easier to edit home movies on a desk with an eighteen-plus-inch screen. but, if we didnt have a desktop and only had this lenovo notebook, we'd get along just fine with buying a portable hard drive and getting widgets for the tv so we could wirelessly use our 40" lcd for our monitor.
if youre contemplating this lenovo for the investment value, i have owned one for a month and i say rest assured: this laptop is a fantastic investment.
also.. the led backlight is in large part the reason this machine is awesome. if you double click the "battery" symbol on the bottom right of the screen, you can easily adjust the level of brightness for the screen. so while internet surfing, you can adjust it to a lower setting and while watching a movie, and the higher setting with bring about a picture clearer than our samsung desktop monitor. clearer than our samsung hdtv..
pros: processing speed, size, comfortable weight, gorgeous picture quality, battery life
cons: i dont like using keypads and the speakers are very general--but ive ordered the necessary accessories to make those small issues go away
my personal investment rating for the lenovo g550 9pu is a full five stars after a month of ownership. it just doesnt get any better than this in this price range.
feel free to hit me with any questions and i'll try and respond quickly
